It’s hard to teach a child the difference between right and wrong, especially when many of us go out and do the opposite of our own advice every day. In fact, one could even say a parent has to be the perfect hypocrite. While this may sound unattractive, take into account the act of eating junk food.

Use Your Personal Values

For instance, want our kids to eat well to promote healthy growth and development. However, most of us are also hiding chocolate fudge ice cream behind the peas in the freezer. We all do wrong, but when a child does wrong it’s important to explain why their action was incorrect. If you are having trouble explaining to a child that it’s wrong to spend eight hours a day in front of a television, then perhaps it’s time to reevaluate your values.

Think about why you felt it was necessary to voice watching TV for that length of time was bad. If you’re having difficulty conveying your thoughts to your child, consider taking a look at what other parents are saying – browsing Mchsfsa.org is a great place to start.

Keep Their Environment Positive

Surround your child and yourself with people who have a moral outlook on life. If you know someone who is breaking the law, willingly hurting their health or just burning bridges with everyone, then they are not a good influence for your children. While that person can have a relationship with your child without you butting in and dictating their actions, take the time and explain to your child why their behavior makes you uncomfortable.
